Assignment Prompt

In one to two pages, describe your philosophy of education through the lens of your commitment to the rural community in which you currently work (or are preparing to work).

Your reflection should be grounded in your specific community context, not rural education in general. Demographic information should be woven into your reflection, not presented as a separate list.

In your response, be sure to:

  • Describe key demographic and contextual features of the community (e.g., population size, race/ethnicity, age, socioeconomic factors, languages spoken, cultural or religious influences, local industries, geography). This will require you to intentionally investigate and learn about your community using credible sources, not rely solely on prior knowledge or assumptions.

  • Explain what these characteristics reveal about the assets, values, and lived realities of the community.

  • Reflect on how this context shapes your beliefs about:

  • Teaching and learning in a rural setting

  • Building relationships with children, families, and the broader community and the role of schools in sustaining community well-being and belonging

  • Discuss how your commitment to this community influences your approach to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practice.

  • Connect your reflections to your own background and experiences, drawing on insights from the Interrogating Self Questionnaire.
